Low-grade workmanship or supervision. The technical problem of deriving a 'solid' version of a character from the pencilled outline of it on the existing pattern drawing was easily solved. In one method the drawing was placed on a light box and a sheet of red masking film, perforated near the top edge with register holes, was secured over it. The draughtsman traced the outline of the character with a point or blade and peeled away the red surface from its colourless support, so that -4IThe making of type -42Aspects of type design the result was a perfect facsimile of the character, in clear on a solid background.

However, if the same design is required for say 300 lpi or less it will certainly be affected. Its subtleties of stroke modelling and serif formation will have to be disciplined or eliminated altogether, to the extent that the distinctive character of the original may be lost. Times Roman has been a particular victim of that enforced erosion of its characteristics. It has been suggested that that should be prevented from the beginning: that at the outset a new type should be planned to exist in a number of digital resolutions, the high-resolution version displaying refinements and subtleties which the designer will simplify or eliminate in the lower resolutions, though the general character will be maintained.

The most significant event, though, was the mechanising of punch-cutting. It removed an obstacle to the progress of mechanical typesetting, and was thereby the indirect cause of the decline of type founding as a trade. The unwitting instigators of the event were Linn Boyd Benton and his partner R. V. Waldo. They conducted the Northwestern Type Foundry in Milwaukee, where Benton devoted his energy -Js- The making of type -36Aspects of type design Matrix engraving. to the creation of types in which all the characters and spaces would be on one or other of nine widths, instead of the many random widths of traditional type founding.
